Antique Dresser with Mirror

"LORRAINE"

This antique dresser was originally purchased from the T. Eaton's mail order catalogue somewhere between 1900 and 1910. I actually tracked down the year when I originally purchased the piece from a storage locker and I am seriously kicking myself for not writing it down! However I did keep some photographs from the original catalogue and those as well as the original purchase tag will be included with the piece.

When this dresser was originally manufactured oak was a common wood choice for furniture and cutting it at an angle (quarter sawn, also known as tiger oak for it's two toned stripe pattern,) was very popular. Because of the higher waste produced by this style of cut, tiger oak was an expensive furniture finish more commonly used for high end pieces. The T. Eaton company (better known now as the Eaton's department store) used to replicate this popular tiger oak pattern by printing it on the furniture, a revolutionary process at the time.

This antique dresser is made of solid hardwood with dovetail drawers and a beautiful mirror with ornamental wood carvings. The original mirror glass is in amazing condition for the age with almost no black spotting. The original tiger oak finish was very worn, peeling and had alligatored in many spots so it was sanded off to the hardwood underneath. The original wood did not have much in terms of pretty grain patterns so this dresser was refurbished with a painted finish.

The dresser and mirror were primed and painted in a warm grey followed by a pure white. A faux aged finish was created by allowing the paint to chip in areas to reveal the grey paint underneath. The hardware was badly tarnished and a few handles were boken so the pulls were upgraded to a twisted pewter ring pull to coordinate with the grey in the piece. The wood top was bleached and white washed to tone down the red hues and create a softer, timeworn look.

The drawer interiours were refreshed with a good cleaning and sanding. The entire interiour of the piece, cabinet and drawers, was hand rubbed with a scented wax to moisturize and protect the wood for years to come. The drawer slides were cleaned and waxed for easy gliding and the sides of the drawers were stamped with a tiled print to add a little bit of dimension and character.
